Chinese Dog Treats Posing Threat

A popular pet-care chain has stopped selling dog and cat treats from China, due to suspicions that the products are responsible for thousands of pet illnesses and deaths.

On January 5th, Petco removed the treats for pets from their shelves as well as their online store. Representatives have reported thousands of sick dogs and cats, and more than a thousand deaths since 2007, possibly due to the Chinese snacks made of rawhide and jerky.

According to the United States Food and Drug Administration, no link has been found between the illnesses and the treats, but did look into the products after almost 5,000 people complained about their pets getting ill or even dying after eating dog and cat treats manufactured in China. The snacks were made with chicken, sweet potato, and duck. Authorities advised the public, saying that symptoms can show up any time from a few hours to days after pets eat the treats. Symptoms include diarrhea, vomiting, and decreased appetite and activity level.

Other pet-store chains have banished these treats from their companies. Petco officials have been phasing out of foods and products made in China for the past few years, opting instead for items made in the United States.

Despite not finding a direct connection between the Chinese treats and the sicknesses, many pet owner are choosing to play it safe and not take chances. As some pets have been diagnosed with pancreatitis, failing kidney, and bleeding in the gastrointestinal tract, many feel it is better to be safe than sorry.
