Lion

The Lion is a second largest living cat, after the tiger. Some males can achieve 550lbs of weight, females are smaller, 250lbs to 400lbs.

There are only two places in the world where lions live. In North Africa (sub-Saharan Africa and in Asia). In Asia lions are endangered species, it means that they will become extinct in the near future.

In the wild lions live 10-15 years, because of constant fighting with younger rivals, male lions live 10 years. In captivity, they can live longer, up to 20 years. Lions live in a pack called ‘’prides’’, made from one male, several female lions and a few young lions. The female lions usually are hunting (zebras and impalas) in packs, while males are resting. The role of the male lion is to protect the pack. Often younger lion’s attack leaders of the pack, in order to gain their herd.

They are nocturnal creatures and very good hunters, although 50% of their food is provided by scavenging.

They start mating at the age 4 and they can mate at any time of year. Lioness is carrying 100-120 days, usually give birth to 1-2 cubs. They are fully grown up after 3 years, in that time they are forced, or they are leaving the herd voluntarily. At age 5 they are capable of leading their own pack. The lioness will always protect young lions, but because males are much bigger, it almost never works, but there were cases when several lioness was fighting together against male lion. The interesting fact is that we can hear lions roar in the distance of 5 miles.
