Madagascar about to lose Lemurs

World over natural habitats are getting destroyed due to rapid industrialization, urbanization and agriculture. This destruction is resulting into displacement of many wild animals and even extinction of the species sometimes. The island country of Madagascar is going through similar environmental crisis. The lemurs from would be extinct from the Earth if no conservation measures are taken.

The specialist in the field is warming about the survival of species. Professor Jonah Ratsimbazafy has been working exclusively on the primates on the island. The deforestation efforts and hunting activities are constantly rising.  Ratsimbazafy is director at GERP, primate research center on the island. In his interview to press he told that the situation is getting more serious. Long patches of forests are being cleared annually.

All 106 species of lemurs have been declared critically endangered.  Madagascar is the only island which hosts unique forests suitable for the growth of lemurs. The lemurs without forests are like talking about fish without water.  The latest figures predict that there is only 10 percent of dense forest left in the Madagascar out of original cover. International Union for the Conservation of Nature has also acknowledged the matter. Professor Ratsimbazafy himself chairs the primates section of the organization.

If the speed of forest destruction remains the same for next two decades, there would be no forest left on this island. There is pressure of the government to clear more land for the agricultural activities as the poor section of growing population demands more food. The poverty on the island is hurting the ecology as this underdeveloped country has around 92 percent people below poverty line.
