Save the World’s Largest Mammals by this Simple Change

You may think that the world’s largest mammals, blue whales, may be one of the safest species in the marine world. However, you will be surprised to learn that they were almost nearing extinction at some point. Thanks to the International Whaling Commission that recovered the dwindling population of Blue Whales. However, now they are facing an all new danger of being struck by a shipping vessel.

Since the navigation through sea is at an all time high due to increased trade between countries, these whales have been exposed to this new danger now. Most of the blue whale hotspots fall on the shipping routes which increases the danger all the more.
Even though there are large processes in place so that the collision with a whale can be avoided, there are still instances that are shockingly high. They have even placed alarms and speed limits which have failed to make an impact. Even though these whales may be the largest in the world, they are a no match for a 200,000 ton commercial vessel. The reporting of the number of whales is not accurate because sometimes the crew does not even know that they have hit the mammal. The damage can be a lot worse than can be seen on paper.

However, thankfully there is a solution to avoid killing these whales. If the shipping lines could change their lanes and avoid the hotspots then there can be a significant change in the number of whales that are being killed by colliding with the ships. Unfortunately, the only problem with this otherwise plan is that the U.S. Navy is already using the alternative route which cannot be opened up for commercial liners.
