THE PROUD GAIT-The Lions

Lions are animals that belong to the family of’ Felid ‘and are carnivorous in nature. That is they feed on other animals. They are found all over the world and people are drawn to them for their mysterious aura and walks with pride.

New creatures, liger- a cross between a tigress and a male lion, tigon- a cross between a male liger and a lioness have been created. Nowadays it is discouraged as emphasis is laid on conserving the species instead.

Lions usually eat animals which are dead from natural causes or killed by other animals like hyenas or wild dogs. Hunting is mainly done by the lioness for the pride.  They usually feed on wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, hippo, crocodiles, pythons, wild hogs. Lions live in the Savannahs, dense bush, grassy plains, scrub, woodlands which are dry and open but they do not live in jungles though they are called kings of jungles.

Lions are depleting in number due to many reasons. Lions are killed for tribal rituals and magical powers. Indiscriminate hunting, poaching and poisoning by human beings have led to the decline in population of the lions. In the zoos they die at a young age due to avoidable diseases. In the circuses the lions are made to stand for long hours on their hind legs leading to physical and psychological problems. ‘Canned Hunting’ is popular with white lions where they are bred for hunting. ‘Cub petting’ is when the tourists pet the cubs. ‘Walking with Lions’-tourists walk with adolescent lions. When these lions become adult they are killed by canned hunters. Sometimes they acquire diseases like canine distemper and parasitic diseases.
Lions have been declared endangered species and nowadays they are kept in reserves and national parks so they can move in their natural habitat and increase in number.
