Different dogs have different characteristics and temperament and they therefore can be used for different purposes. First and foremost, dogs have been used for many years for protection. Such dogs are used to guard property such as homes or business premises. Examples of such dogs include the Doberman and the German shepherd.
Dogs are also used to herd sheep or cattle. These dogs protect the livestock from predators such as lions and hyenas. The Komondor is an example of such a dog. Some dogs are also used for retrieval. They trace and bring back lost livestock.
Human beings have since time immemorial used dogs for hunting purposes. These dogs chase and capture wild animals such as antelopes. The American water is an example of a hunting dog. Dogs are also used by man for companionship at home. Such dogs tend to be docile and quiet.
During war time, dogs come in handy. Fighting dogs are used to locate hidden enemies and attack them. Needless to say, such dogs are aggressive and ruthless. Examples of such dogs include the Bull terrier and the Keeshond.
Some dogs are used to smell out prohibited substances such as narcotic drugs .These dogs are called scent hounds and are mainly used by law enforcement authorities. The Basset, Beagles and Coon are examples scent hounds .Other dogs are endowed with a sharp vision which is useful during hunting. They are referred to as sight hounds. Examples of such dogs include the Greyhound ,Pharaoh and Ibizan.
It is therefore evident that the dog is a very useful animal to mankind.
