A Dormouse Has Just One Life, But It Can Be Eaten By A Cat That Has Nine Lives

The dormouse is probably the most common animal in the world. Though 29 different species of dormouse are known to exist in the world as of today, yet the British Isles house just one of these--the hazel dormouse. The dormouse is found in parts of Asia and Africa as well because of the warmer climate there. They form nests in thick forage or undergrowth where they can be safe from predators.

Different species of dormice grow up to different lengths. A particular species is known to acquire a length of  20 centimeters. The small size is a compliment to its efforts to move about without being seen by predators.

Most members of the species are adapted to climbing trees in search of food and shelter. When it comes to food, dormice can eat almost anything and everything. Fruits, insects and flowers are the favorites of dormice. But the diet of a dormouse depends on the particular species. Most of them are nocturnal.

Dormice often fall prey to a number of hostile predators. Owls and eagles love to eat dormice. Falcons can spot a dormouse even from the skies. Foxes and cats are the primary predators dormice have to confront on the land.

They are known particularly for the dormant periods they spend in hibernation particularly during the cold winter. Dormice begins to breed in the spring when they emerge from hibernation. Female members give birth to 3-5 offsprings at one time. This can take place several times a year. But the birth occurs only after a gestation period of around one month.
