Persian cat

The Persian cat is a unique breed of cat, it has long hair, round face, short muzzle and big eyes. It is often called: Longhair, Persian Longhair, Shiraz or Shirazi. The first record of this cat is from 1620, when it was brought from Persia, into Italy. Soon it becomes a very popular house pet in the UK and after the World War II, in the US.

It is a very quiet cat, although it likes nature, it can adapt very good for apartment life. They are very connected to their owners and a have high level of obedience. The average lifespan is 13 years.
Although it is considered to be a very healthy breed of cats, it has two common diseases. PKD (Polycystic kidney disease), 36-49% of adult cats can be affected by this disease, which is causing kidney failure.

Symptoms are: increased drinking and urination, weight loss, appetite loss and heavy depression. This is a genetic disease and it is always transmitted to the next generation. But, in the last few years, with the DNA screening available, this gene was completely eliminated, so today’s specimens are free of this disease, but there are still some specimens with this gene. Other disease is the progressive retinal atrophy, it is a degenerative eye disease, and it cannot be cured.

The Persian cat was popular in history and still is. Many movie production use this cat in their movies, often than other breeds of cats. So, it appeared in movies like: Stuart Little (Snowbell), The cat returns, Harry Potter and James Bond.
