Parvo disease is a highly contagious viral disease that affects dogs. This is life-threatening disease which rapidly affects a dog’s body and mainly attacks the intestinal tract. This disease attacks the white blood cells of the dog and if the dog is young, the disease can cause damage to the heart muscle causing lifelong cardiac issues.

Symptoms of the disease

The most common symptoms of Parvo disease are lethargy, loss of appetite, severe vomiting, and bloody, foul-smelling diarrhea that may lead to dehydration which can be fatal.

How does it spread?

This is an extremely contagious virus; it can be transmitted by any person, animal, or object that comes in contact with an infected dog's feces. The virus is a highly resistant strain that can survive under any condition; it can live in the environment and on inanimate objects like feeding bowls, shoes, clothes, carpets, rugs, and floors for months.

What dogs are susceptible to the virus?

Puppies, young dogs, and dogs that have not been vaccinated are most prone to the virus especially in urban areas. The Parvo virus affects most members of the canine family, such as wolves, coyotes, foxes, etc. Breeds that are at higher risk are Rottweilers, German Shepherds, American Staffordshire terriers Labrador retrievers, and Doberman pinschers.

How can you protect your dog?

Ensure the safety of your dog from this deadly virus by keeping up-to-date with its vaccines. The Parvo virus vaccine should be an essential vaccine for your dog. The first vaccination should be given within 6-8 weeks and then followed up by booster shots every four weeks till 16-20 weeks.

What can you do?

This virus is a deadly contagious virus and it is best to keep your surroundings clean and disinfected, even if an infected dog has not visited. Dog shows are the worst culprits for spreading this disease.
