Water safety for your dog

Water safety for your dog

Swimming is the best exercise for you, but it has the same effect on your dog. If you are going on a holiday, with your dog, you will want him to swim. Many dogs can swim, but some are simply too afraid or don’t like it. Before you send your dog swimming in the ocean, or in a deep pool, make sure that he can swim. Beside this concern, water is the second thing that you must pay attention to. For example, in 2007, three dogs died after swimming in a lake that contained blue-green algae. If a place where you want your dogs to swim, contains these algae, don’t allow them to swim.

Ponds and lakes are also a good place where your dog can swim. But, again, you must be careful. For example, many golf courses and parks treat their ponds with chemicals that should prevent algae. These chemicals can cause skin irritation on your dog. In some cases, they can even cause liver damage and neurologic damage. No matter how much the water looks clean, you must be sure that it doesn’t contain chemicals.

Ponds can also contain pesticides and herbicides. Ponds near farms usually contain them, so be careful. On the other side, lakes where motor-boating is present, motor oil can be found in the water. If there is a lot of motor oil, don’t allow your dog swim there.

Most dogs swim in pools. If you have a pool at home, make sure it is covered when you don’t use it. Dogs shouldn’t swim alone. In any case, they should wear a pet flotation device when they swim. Don’t let a dog drink water from the pool and always keep an eye on him.
