Having a hamster as your pet

If you decided to have a hamster, start reading. Although they are small, there are many things you should know about them. Unfortunately, serious mistakes are possible. Many pet store employees won’t tell you that some types of hamsters must live alone. Syrian hamster (they are the biggest hamsters) or Chinese dwarf hamster must be alone in the cage. If you have two of them, they will fight all the time. If you want two, three or more hamsters, you should choose some from Winter White or Siberian Dwarf hamsters, Campbell's Russian Dwarf hamster and Roborovski Dwarf hamsters. They can be held together.

You should know that females are more aggressive than males, so they may bite you sometimes. Also, make sure your hamster or hamsters are safe. If you have a cat, make sure it cannot hurt your small pet. Dogs can also be dangerous for hamsters. The most important thing is to make sure your hamster has enough space. This means you must provide him the right care. One of the mistakes new owners make is placing a Syrian hamster in a 12 x 12-inch cage. They need a bigger cage, at least 75 x 40 x 40 cm. Hamster wheel should be at least 8’’ for this type of hamsters. Although, they prefer 11’’ wheels. If you are having a smaller type of hamster, give him as much space as you can.

Choosing the right bedding is tricky. Do not use chlorophyll or cedar shavings. These aren’t good for the hamster’s lungs, especially for little hamsters. The solution is to use shavings from recycled paper or aspen wood.
